Start off the New Year with a "new look" for your home. One of the most inexpensive ways to give your house a "face-lift" is by changing the
color(s) of your interior walls.

Here are some tips and recommended Tools:

· Drop-cloth or old bed sheets
· Brushes, 4" brush for wall surfaces, 2-21/2" for cutting in
· Sandpaper for smoothing
· Roller type (depends on texture of walls) and tray
· Extension handle for the roller
· Masking tape
· Ladder
· Rags for clean-up
· Putty knife and spackle

How to determine how much paint to buy?

Amounts vary by product but generally speaking a gallon of paint will go approximately 350-400 square feet per gallon on a smooth, sealed surface. For rough or textured walls, cut this estimate in half. However, it is always a good idea to figure on a little extra for future touch-ups".

**Note: Don't forget to include doors, closets, window frames in your calculations. It is not recommended that you thin the paint down.

Application Tips

  • Using a brush: Dip half the length of the bristles into the paint. Tap brush gently against the side of the can but do not wipe it across the lip.
  • Holding a brush: Hold handle near the base exerting light pressure with your fingertips. Exert enough pressure to make bristles flex slightly toward you as you begin the stroke.
  • Preserving your brush: In order to keep your brush moist between paint intervals, wrap it in Saran wrap.
  • Using a roller: Roll slowly into the lower end of the tray. Roll back and forth until the roller is well covered with paint. Roll back onto ridges in upper portion of the tray. Lightly roll back and forth to remove excess paint.

Helpful Hints

~Consider using non-toxic de-icing substances such as clean clay cat litter, sand, or fireplace/stove ash to prevent hazardous waste from chemicals.

~Use electric snow removal products rather than gasoline-powered ones.

~"Recycle" old newspapers by making rolled paper logs for your fireplace.
